1. A scholarship of $5,000 may be awarded to postgraduate or post-doctoral students undertaking research on rugby league in Australia. 2. The scholarship will be awarded for one calendar year and may be renewable for one and even two years. 3. A successful applicant will be known as the Tom Brock Scholar and any publication or conference paper, drawing on research undertaken during that year, should make reference to this fact in its title. 4. The Tom Brock Scholar will be required to provide two brief reports on research progress during the year that the scholarship is held. Applications for the Scholarship should be submitted by 1 October each year. The decision on the Scholarship will be announced in January the following year.
The
Tom Brock Bequest Committee was established by the Australian Society for
Sports History to promote research and writing on the history of Rugby League,
with a major focus on the South Sydney district. One of the Committee’s
functions is the award of an annual scholarship intended to assist early
career researchers.
The
scholarship will be awarded to assist in the completion of a relevant project
in the field of history or a related humanities or social science discipline,
preferably related to:
·
The social history of rugby
league in Australia, OR
·
The history of the relationship
of rugby league to other sports in Australia
Other
topics which may be considered by the committee are:
·
The history of the relationship
of Australian rugby league with rugby league in other countries.
·
The history of rugby league in
other countries.
· The history of sport more generally, in the South Sydney region. Preference may be given for
projects which relate to the South Sydney Rugby League Club and normally will
be given to applications from current or recent postgraduate students,
however undergraduate honours degree projects may also be considered and
established researchers may also apply. In the event of a lack of
applications of sufficient merit the committee may choose to not award a
scholarship for that year. Although the award is for one year only a
successful applicant may apply for a second consecutive award. Payments will be made in two
stages, the first after approval by the committee of the scholar’s progress
report, which is due six months after the announcement of the award. The
second payment will be made after the committee has approved the scholar’s
final report, due twelve months after the announcement of the award. The successful scholar may be
required to present a paper, based on the project, to the next Sporting
Traditions Conference ASSH and will be invited to attend the annual Tom Brock
Lecture to participate in the formal presentation of the award. Applications should address the following criteria: ·
