The Australian Society for Sports History (ASSH)
offers a range of Awards and Honours to recognise service, contribution and
achievement within sports history. The Awards and Honours are coordinated by
the Awards Committee, a Subcommittee of the Executive which is chaired by a
former President and two Executive members. This Committee currently consists of Richard Cashman (Chair), Douglas Booth (Awards Officer) and Murray Phillips.
Over a two-year period there will be five formal awards/honours that may be
awarded. Four of the five awards/prizes are awarded biennially while the ASSH
Honours Dissertation Prize is awarded annually. Winners of the four biennial
awards will be announced at the ASSH conference dinner. The five awards/honours are:

2. ASSH Postgraduate Essay Prize
3. ASSH Honours Dissertation Prize
4. ASSH Fellowship
5. ASSH Service Award

ASSH BOOK AWARD (MONOGRAPH)
The ASSH Book Award
(Monograph) recognises outstanding scholarship in sports history. Eligible books for the
award include all sports history monographs written by ASSH members and all
sports history monographs (including by non-members) that have an Australian
and/or New Zealand
focus. Monographs must have been published in the previous two calendar years
prior to the year of the award (for the 2009 award, books published in 2007
and 2008 are eligible). The ASSH Book Award (Monograph) recipient receives a prize
of $1000 and a certificate.
A copy of books nominated for the ASSH Book Award (Monograph) should be sent directly to
each of the members of the Book Award Sub-Committee.
ASSH members, authors or publishers may submit books for consideration for
the ASSH Book Award (Monograph).
Judging Panel (2009): Daryl Adair, Doug Booth, Charlotte MacDonald
and Bill Murray.
Submission process: One copy needs to be sent directly to each member
of the judging panel.

ASSH BOOK AWARD (EDITED)
The ASSH Book Award (Edited) recognises outstanding scholarship in sports
history. To be eligible for the award, the collection must:

be edited
by an ASSH member or ASSH members (contributors may include non-members)
-
have an
Australian and/or New Zealand focus
-
comprise
predominantly original pieces of work that have not been published
elsewhere
Edited
books must have been published in the previous two calendar years prior to
the year of the award (for the 2009 award, books published in 2007 and 2008
are eligible). The ASSH Book Award (Edited) recipient received a prize of
$1,000 (TBC) and a certificate.
A copy of books nominated for the ASSH Book Award

the ASSH Book Award (edited).

ASSH POSTGRADUATE ESSAY PRIZE
The ASSH Postgraduate Essay Prize is presented to best postgraduate student
essay. This prize is restricted to students enrolled at the time of
submission in full or part-time Master’s or PhD programs only.
Submissions for either the ASSH Postgraduate Essay Prize should deal with the
historical, economic, political, social, legal or philosophical significance
of sporting activity.
The ASSH Postgraduate Essay Prize recipient receives a certificate, a
one-year membership to ASSH and travel, accommodation and registration costs
to attend the ASSH Conference to present the essay as a lunchtime
presentation. ASSH
retains the right of first option on publishing the winning entry in Sporting
Traditions. Postgraduate students or their supervisors may nominate for
the ASSH Postgraduate Essay Prize.
Applicants for the Postgraduate Essay Prize should submit three hard copies
of a 7000 word (including notes), previously unpublished paper for
consideration.

ASSH HONOURS DISSERTATION PRIZE
The
ASSH Honours Dissertation Prize is awarded annually
to the best Honours thesis in the field of sports history completed in the
previous year. The ASSH Honours Dissertation Prize is restricted to students
enrolled in a full or part-time Honours degrees.
(This award specifically excludes Master’s and PhD candidates).
The ASSH Honours Dissertation Prize recipient receives a certificate, a
one-year membership to ASSH and a $500 prize. ASSH retains the right of first
option to publish the winning entry in an ASSH Studies.
Honours students or their supervisors may nominate for the Honours
Dissertation Prize.
Three hard copies of an Honours Dissertation (maximum of 20,000 words) should
be submitted with the appropriate nomination form
for consideration for the ASSH Honours Dissertation Prize.

ASSH FELLOWSHIP
The
ASSH Fellowship is presented to members and non-members who have made an
outstanding contribution to the field of sports history, either in Australia or
internationally. It is presented in recognition of the leading role that the
recipient has played in developing and furthering the research interests of
sports history. Any sports history scholar is eligible to receive the ASSH
Fellowship.
The ASSH Fellow receives a plaque as well as an Honorary Life Membership
of ASSH, which are formally presented at the ASSH Conference Banquet.
Any ASSH member may nominate candidate(s) for an ASSH Fellow Award.
Nominations for the ASSH Fellowship must be made on the nomination form, and include a 500 word citation
outlining the contribution and impact the nominee has had on sports history
scholarship, and a list of key publications.
Nominations for the ASSH Service Award must be made on a nomination form and
include a 500 word citation outlining the contribution the nominee has made
to the organisational development of the Society, including positions held
and years of service.

ASSH SERVICE AWARD
The ASSH Service
Award is presented to ASSH members who have made a sustained and outstanding
contribution to the organisational development of ASSH. Any ASSH member who
has served the Society in a formal or informal capacity is eligible to
receive the ASSH Service Award. Any ASSH member may nominate candidate(s) for
an ASSH Service Award.
ASSH Service Award recipients receive a certificate and an Honorary Life
Membership of ASSH, which are formally presented at the ASSH Conference
Banquet. Nominations for the ASSH Service Award must be made on the nomination form and sent to Richard Cashman (see address below).
